Cross-country ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club holds group ski outings Wednesdays and Saturdays at various locations, weather permitting. Shasta Cross Country Ski Weekend Friday-Sunday, Jan. 8-10: The Southern Oregon Nordic Club's annual outing to the Mount Shasta Nordic Center will include clinics and the opportunity to ski groomed trails and socialize with like-minded companions. Participants may participate in Saturday’s beginner/novice lessons, intermediate ski clinic and introduction to skate skiing at Shasta Nordic; free-ski the Shasta Nordic trails; snowshoe designated trails; or self-organize a group to try wild snow from the Bunny Flat snow park area (Everett Memorial Highway north of Mt. Project FeederWatch Saturday, Jan. 9: Project FeederWatch is a continent-wide, citizen-science program run by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, with individuals and groups making regular counts of birds that visit feeders in backyards, at nature centers and other locations throughout North America. The counts are conducted from November through March, and the data is submitted to help scientists track broad-scale movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. The local counts take place every other Thursday and Friday at Coyote Trails School of Nature in Medford and every other Saturday at North Mountain Park Nature Center in Ashland. The free, one-hour watches are open to everyone and provide novice birders with an easy way to learn to identify birds. There is shelter in case of inclement weather. The next count will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 9 at North Mountain Park, followed by counts from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 14-15 at Coyote Trails. Frostbite Run Saturday, Jan. 9: The annual 5K and 10K runs begin at noon at Talent Middle School, 102 Christian Ave., Talent. For details and to register, see www.sorunners.org Crater Lake snowshoe hikes Through May 1: Free, ranger-guided snowshoe walks are offered at 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, with additional outings offered weekdays in early January. The walks last about two hours and cover a mile of moderately strenuous terrain through forests and meadows along Crater Lake's rim. Participants will learn about the park's plant and animal life, and how they survive the long winter. No previous snowshoe experience is required, and snowshoes are provided free of charge. Participants should be at least 8 years old, and wear warm clothing and water-resistant footwear. Space is limited. To sign up, call the park visitor center at 541-594-3100. Native Plant Society program Thursday, Jan. 21: Jay Lininger, a fire ecologist and senior scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity, will speak about "Activism in an Age of Mass Extinction." Refreshments will be served at 6:45 p.m., the meeting and free program start at 7 p.m. at Southern Oregon University Science Building, Room 161. The event is open to the public. For a SOU campus map, see www.sou.edu/map Grouse Gap snowshoe Sunday, Jan. 24 : Siskiyou Mountain Club hike leader Angie Panter will lead a 5-mile, out-and-back snowshoe to Grouse Gap Shelter near Mt. Ashland. The moderate 2.5-mile snowshoe into Grouse Gap may include some snow angels and snowball fights along the way, and Angie will serve hot chocolate, so bring your favorite mug. Come prepared for winter weather, bring plenty of snacks and water, and don't forget your snowshoes and poles. A carpool will meet at 8 a.m. at Ashland Shop'n Kart, 2268 Ashland St. Drivers need to have a sno-park permit. Will be back to Ashland by 3 p.m. Email [email protected] for details and to sign-up. Agate Lake bird walk Wednesday, Feb. 3: The Rogue Valley Audubon Society holds free bird walks at Agate Lake the first Wednesday of every month. The walks begin at 8:30 a.m. and end before noon. The slow-paced walk covers about 1.5 miles. Meet at the main parking area on the east side of the lake opposite the boat ramp. For details, see www.roguevalleyaudubon.org . Couple's Shuffle 10K Relay and Love Stinks 5K Saturday, Feb. 6: The annual couple's 10K relay race and 5K singles run begin at 9 a.m. at Phoenix Elementary.
