Alleged prowler killed in Grants Pass Comment By Melissa McRobbie and Shaun Hall Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Melissa McRobbie and Shaun Hall Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Jul. 15, 2015 at 4:20 PM By Melissa McRobbie and Shaun Hall Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Jul. 15, 2015 at 4:20 PM » Social News A resident of West Park Street in Grants Pass shot and killed a reported prowler Tuesday night, police said. Police identified the dead man as 32-year-old Matthew Durbin of Grants Pass. The shooting occurred in the 900 block of West Park Street, where the street dead-ends behind the Josephine County Fairgrounds. Police responded to a report of a prowler at the home about 10:15 p.m. As officers were en route, dispatchers were told that someone was trying to break into the house, police said in a press release. Moments later, shots were fired. When officers arrived, they found a man down near the side of the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The residents were unhurt, police said. Susie Mueller, who lives a couple of doors down, said that during the confrontation she heard a voice say, "You just need to calm down. You just need to leave." Another neighbor, Robert Johnson, who lives next door, said he heard the gunfire. "We heard shots," he said. "We hit the deck." Grants Pass police Deputy Chief Jim Hamilton said Wednesday morning it doesn't appear the prowler and the residents knew each other. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 541-450-6260. The shooting was the first homicide in the city since a murder-suicide on Northwest Sunset Drive in May.
