Mail Tribune 100, March 7, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 7, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Mar. 7, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News March 7, 1916 TWO ARRESTS FOR LIQUOR VIOLATIONS Viola Stone and Arthur Diltz were arrested this morning by Chief of Police Hittson and Constable Hammond on warrants charging them with maintaining a nuisance in the conduct of the Elwood rooming house. On a search warrant the officers found evidence that the place is used for "trafficking in liquor," it is said, which under the prohibition statute, is maintaining a nuisance. The Elwood rooming house is located on East Main street. The case will be given a preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Glenn O. Taylor at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The case of Brosins vs. Southern Pacific company, called in the circuit court this morning, was halted, after the jury was in the box and the attorneys for each side had presented their opening statements. Negotiations were pending for a settlement out of court. Agreement was finally reached between the litigants. Should this be approved by the headquarters of the Southern Pacific in San Francisco, the case will be dismissed. The Baby Week program for Wednesday, March 8, will feature addresses by physicians on appropriate subjects at the public library hall from 2:30 until 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Dr. Thayer will discuss "Infant Mortality and Causes"; Dr. Stearns, "The Prospective Mother"; Dr. Emmens, "Care of the Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat"; Dr. Wm. Van Scoy, "Care of the Teeth"; Dr. Conroy, "Feeding." The athletic events at the armory tomorrow night promise to be more than usually interesting. Tiptop material will clash in the several classes. Local sports are awaiting results with more than ordinary expectancy. The public is invited to the federal inspection of Seventh company by Lieutenant Willis Shippan at the armory tonight. This will be the regular annual inspection. Seventh company will go into camp this year with a full company of war strength of 104 men and three officers. The waiting list of applicants is the largest ever recorded since the company was organized.
