Free well water testing offered at Spring Fair Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 20, 2016 at 11:31 AM Posted Apr. 20, 2016 at 11:31 AM » Social News Free screening of well water for nitrate will be offered at the Master Gardener Spring Fair, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at The Expo, 1 Peninger Road, Central Point. Those who want their water tested should bring about a cup of untreated well water in a clean jar, kept cold, to the Well Water Testing Booth. The test is anonymous and takes just a few minutes. Information will be available on caring for private wells and septic systems and how to protect drinking water supplies from nitrate contamination. Elevated nitrate concentrations have been detected in various parts of the Rogue Valley, according to a release from Patton Environmental LLC, one of the event's sponsors. Groundwater can be contaminated by septic systems or agricultural activity. Improved management of fertilizer and irrigation applications and improved septic maintenance and operation can help prevent contamination, the release said. Nitrate can be an indicator that other contaminants might be present from surface activities. More information is available at www.healthoregon.org/wells .
