CRIME Klamath Falls murder may have been over noise dispute Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 9, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Jan. 9, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News The murder of a man in Klamath Falls during may have been motivated by an argument over noise levels at a downtown motel, according to court records. Detectives with the Klamath County Major Crimes team believe Rick William Aston, 57, may have been killed Saturday, Jan. 2, by Matthew Dean Reyes, 26, after Aston complained Reyes and his companions were being too loud. Aston was staying in a room at River Park Inn on the 100 block of Main Street, while Reyes was visiting relatives in the room next door. Aston was scheduled to work a night shift for Access Taxi at 6:30 p.m. and prior to that, complained to his neighbors about the noise they were making. “(A witness) said the victim knocked on her door asking them to be quiet earlier in the afternoon of Jan. 2,” said a report from Detective David Chambers. “Matt (Reyes) was standing outside next to the victim.” When Reyes returned to the witness' room, she said he was “acting weird” and physically assaulted the witness, who had to pull Reyes off of her. Police called When Aston did not arrive for work, a friend called police and they discovered his body around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in his motel room. He had been killed by a cut to the neck, possibly from a hammer or an edged weapon. Prior to finding Aston's body, police were already investigating the theft of his wallet and ID after Reyes allegedly attempted to dispose of them. The Klamath Falls Police Department responded to a call around 7:40 p.m. Saturday from a witness who said Reyes asked him to dispose of property belonging to Aston, including a set of keys, two wallets and an Oregon driver's license. It was not clear from the report if the witness and Reyes knew each other. The witness said Reyes drove to the witness' house on the 100 block of North Broad Street and offered him $20 to give Reyes a ride. The witness drove Reyes to Papa Murphy's on South Sixth Street where Reyes ordered pizzas and soda. Reyes then purchased $20 in gasoline and cigarettes from Fred Meyer for the witness, who dropped Reyes off at a residence on the 2400 block of Shasta Way. Upon leaving the vehicle, Reyes handed the witness a potato chip bag and told him to “get rid” of it. Inside the bag, among the chips, were the items belonging to Aston. The witness said Reyes also left a jacket with the name “Rick” on it in his vehicle. The witness contacted police who later learned the items belonged to a murder victim. “I have probable cause to believe, and do believe, that Matthew Dean Reyes has committed the crimes of murder, assault in the first degree and unlawful use of a weapon,” said Chambers in his report. Suspect still sought As of press time, Reyes remains at large and is the subject of a nationwide manhunt. He is described as a 6-foot, 1-inch Native American male weighing 225 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He is a Beaverton resident with ties to Klamath Falls and Chiloquin. His most recent Klamath County address was on the 100 block of Wasco Road in Klamath Falls. Those who know the whereabouts of Reyes are encouraged to not approach the suspect, but to call 911. Tips can also be left with Klamath Falls Police Department at 541-883-5336, or anonymously at 541-883-5334. Police had also been looking for two persons of interest linked to Reyes and have since located them and determined they were not involved in the murder. Kristine Louis Soto, a.k.a. Reyes, 49, was located Sunday. She had been occupying the motel room where Reyes was visiting at the time of the murder. Jaurdyn Alexandria Mosttler, 19, was located Monday. She was a resident of the Shasta Way address where Reyes stopped after purchasing pizza.
