Shakespeare opens 2001 with `Tempest' By Bill Varble of the Mail Tribune William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" will kick off the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 2001 season in the Angus Bowmer Theatre in Ashland 11 months from now, the OSF announced Friday. "The Merchant of Venice," "Troilus and Cressida" and "The Merry Wives of Windsor" make up the rest of the Shakespeare component of the season announced by OSF Artistic Director Libby Appel at the festival's annual members meeting in Ashland. Also on the bill for next year are an Anton Chekhov classic, a musical play and several contemporary works, including a West Coast premiere. "We tried to take into consideration a variety of theatrical styles and plays that will engage our audiences on many levels," Appel said. For the 2001 season, "Enter the Guardsman" features seven actor/singers and a small band. Pedro Calderon de la Barca's "Life is a Dream" will have its West Coast premiere. "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992," will be presented by an ensemble of eight women. Two new plays will run in the Black Swan, David Lindsay-Abaire's off-Broadway hit, "Fuddy Meers," and Nilo Cruz's "Two Sisters and a Piano." Also Friday, board of directors treasurer Susan Naumes reported the festival's earned income totaled $12 million for the fiscal year, 7 percent above budget expectations; operating expenses totaled $14.5 million, exceeding the budget by $65,000; and contributed income was $3.6 million, which exceeded the budget goal by nearly 8 percent. OSF received donations from Soroptimist International of Ashland ($15,000) and the Tudor Guild ($200,000), and a symbolic check of $174,624.50 from marketing director Janeen Olsen. Olsen said that was the the value of the time donated by the OSF's 749 volunteers. " Three Sisters ," by Anton Chekov, directed by Libby Appel. In the Black Swan Theatre: " The Trip to Bountiful ," by Horton Foote, directed by Libby Appel. " Fuddy Meers ," by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by James Edmondson. " Two Sisters and a Piano ," by Nilo Cruz, directed by Andrea Frye. On the Elizabethan stage: " The Merchant of Venice ," directed by Michael Donald Edwards. " Troilus and Cressida ," directed by Kenneth Albers. " The Merry Wives of Windsor ," directed by Lillian Garrett-Groag.
