If Larry were blind or physically handicapped, he might thank the government for tens of thousands of free audiobooks. If Larry appreciated technology and science, he might thank NASA for putting a man on the moon and launching the Hubble space telescope. If Larry emailed his letter, he might thank the government for the internet. While no one would argue that the government is always wise or thrifty, it does a heck of a lot more than Larry seems to imagine. And while we have private enterprise to thank for a lot of wonderful products and innovations, I have to wonder if Larry has recently flown in a plane, dealt with a cable company or shopped in a big box store. The simple act of renting a car is enough to make one yearn for some sort of nationalization program. "Competition" isn't necessarily enough when every business seems to be reaching for the same bottom line in terms of value and customer service. Grover Gardner Medford Clinton story underplayed On Tuesday, June 8, 2016, the United States of America hit another milestone in our almost 240-year history. Secretary Hillary Clinton became the first woman to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for President. The MT front page headline on Wednesday June 8 read “Breidenthal trips spur expense rules.” Well OK, perhaps not all the polls had closed by press time and that is why there was just enough time to squeeze in a front-page article on the right side. The MT front-page headline on Thursday, June 9, read “Medford casino would cost other tribes.” So what’s the problem MT, why not a headline? Is it because a Democrat won, a woman won, or because it was Secretary Clinton who won? Robin Brown Medford Why is it? Why is it that among Republican Party members, Congressional legislators and officeholders the "moment of silence" in the face of one violent gun rampage after another is their only response and goes on forever? The Republican caucus in both huses is, as always, silent! Impotent and in cowardly prostration and allegiance to the money of the gun manufacturers lobby and the NRA. When you think about our society with so many military-style weapons and mentally ill people, mass shootings are too easy to imagine. (And I think people who want to join ISIS are mentally ill.) Smart gun safety is in order. I think the founding fathers would agree. Cathy Garrahan Medford Too congested already In the article “Small scale boom” on June 6, Bill Thorndike, president of Medford Fabrication, said that if the Land Use Board of Appeals gives its “blessing” to the “proposed” Costco off Table Rock Road in Central Point there will be a ripple effect in the area with building. Why then has Tom Humphrey said he’s not worried about Central Point being overbuilt? Why then was the original plan for the Central Point area changed to possibly allow for Costco, a retail warehouse that draws major traffic to be considered? Currently in the immediate area we have multiple shipping and trucking companies, a Family Fun Center, a water park nearby and an airport constantly changing on Biddle Rd. Somehow the original small-town-feel plan just isn’t adding up to that! It will be a re-creation of Highway 62 or worse, destroying that feel of Central Point’s downtown and neighboring areas. We have seen how busy it can get as well as dangerous for cars, as well as trucks near the freeway, Pilot station and Freeman Road. This plan should be in a less congested area. L. Borum Central Point Casinos better than pot I read where our county and city officials are concerned about the influx of casinos. I would think they would be more concerned about the influx of marijuana and the problems that go with it. You can't get a DUII from going to a casino. No such thing as driving under the influence of casino. You don't have the odor from a casino drifting over your fence from a casino-playing neighbor. Put your heads back on your shoulders and stop and think. Employers will be taxing people, not earning money under the table. In applying for a job, how many employers ask if you have a player card?
