Everett Allen Scott, 48, of Upper Applegate Road pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to second-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree unlawful sexual penetration. A count of first-degree rape and four counts of first-degree sodomy were dismissed in the plea agreement. The girl reported the sexual abuse to her parents, who themselves have some developmental delays. The parents didn't immediately go to the police when they heard what was happening. As a result, the abuse went on, according to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office. According to an indictment, the abuse continued from January 2013 into July 2014. It began when the girl was younger than 12 years old. Scott's defense attorney, Jeni Feinberg, said Scott was abandoned by his mother as a child, suffered a brain injury and has self-medicated himself with alcohol. She said he has had multiple suicide attempts. "None of that excuses this. We know that," Feinberg said. "But it's a heartbreaking situation on all fronts." Feinberg said the 20-year prison sentence was long, but Scott would have likely fared worse if he had gone to trial instead of accepting the plea agreement. She said he confessed to the crimes and did not want to put the girl through a trial. The District Attorney's Office said the case involved a truly vulnerable child. In handing down the sentence, Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia said, "This is just a horrible situation all the way around. I just hope you are protected when you go to prison and aren't victimized in prison." Scott has been in Jackson County Jail since November 2014 on $1 million bail.
