HOLIDAY SHOPPING A lighter shade of Black Friday Whether in tents or camping chairs, bargain hunters say the early bird gets the best worm By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 27, 2014 @ 5:29 pm Updated Nov 28, 2014 at 9:20 AM By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Posted Nov. 27, 2014 @ 5:29 pm Updated Nov 28, 2014 at 9:20 AM » Social News At 1 p.m. Thursday, the same time many in the Rogue Valley fretted over their turkey's moisture or wondered whether there was enough stuffing, about a dozen people sat in camping chairs and flipped through advertising circulars as they waited for Best Buy's doors to open at 5 p.m. The scene may have seemed out of place to traditionalists, but for Joseph Tavarez of White City, the Thanksgiving afternoon in front of the store was part of his own tradition, filled with family and camaraderie. He has been camping in front of the Medford Best Buy each Black Friday since the store opened in 2010. "We just got here last night," Tavarez said. He explained that he had been waiting in line with his cousin, Jorge Tavarez, since 8 p.m. Wednesday evening. He was second in line. Ahead of them in a tent were Jon Grimes, 25, and his younger brother Jake, 13, both of Medford, each eyeing the same doorbuster item, a 50-inch Panasonic high-definition television advertised for $199.99. Supplies were limited to stock on hand, and the handful available were expected to move quickly. "I'm pretty excited. I'm buying my own TV," Jake said. "That's like all I can afford right now." Jake claimed it was his first time attending a Black Friday sale, and Jon said he'd been to sales before, but this was his first time camping. "I've never been first, or stayed more than 24 hours before," Jon said. The two slept in their tent and zero-degree rated sleeping bags. Restrooms were limited to a portable toilet Best Buy provided behind the store. "It was only us and these guys last night," Jon said pointing toward the Tevarezes' spot. "We brought two laptops and have just watched movies." In addition to the time the two brothers were spending together, the brothers said Thanksgiving dinner was waiting for them as soon as they returned home with their televisions resting in Jon's pickup bed. "As soon as we get our TVs, we're going home and having Thanksgiving, so we're not missing anything," Jon said. Meanwhile, Tavarez's family visited him to drop off breakfast while he and his cousin waited in line. He had a list of items he planned to pick up for friends and family, and others that he'd resell for a nominal fee. "It's mostly for other people. This year, there's not too much I'm interested in," Tevarez said. His list included the same Panasonic television, a pair of Beats headphones marked down about $100, a Nutribullet, a discounted Microsoft tablet, and video game console bundles, all to be for others. He claims he'll be able to resell the items for less than retail while clearing a couple hundred dollars profit for his efforts. "I might pick up a wireless printer, just because my family needs one," he said. "Nothing else really piques my interest." Tevarez said having his cousin, Jorge, with him made the waiting easier, but he has camped alone before and made new friends. In 2011, for example, he recalled collecting money and putting together a makeshift Thanksgiving dinner of Fred Meyer rotisserie chicken and potato salad while everyone waited in line. "We decided to make our own Thanksgiving," he said. "Some good friends came out of that." While many traditionalists have lamented that Black Friday has crept earlier into the Thanksgiving holiday over the past few years, Tevarez appreciated Best Buy's earlier opening time of 5 p.m. Thanksgiving day, compared to last year's opening time of 8 p.m.  "It's really nice. I'll have that time with my family that I've missed these couple years," he said. Nick Morgan is a Mail Tribune newsroom assistant. Reach him at [email protected] or 541-776-4477.
