Hope was born July 7, 1925, the daughter of Lena Willard Burgoin and Ward William Burgoin, and sister of Betty in Omaha, Neb. She graduated from the renowned South Omaha High School and later from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with a degree in education. In 1946, Hope married Captain Jack William Lewis, a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force. They settled in Medford, Ore. where they raised their three children. She loved the Rogue Valley and the town of Medford, residing there most of her life. Hope was a teacher in the Medford Public School System and earned her master's degree in Education from Southern Oregon College. She later became co-owner and manager of the "Doctors' Telephone Exchange," an answering service with paging capabilities by phone. In 1972, she married Norman Hord and spent the next 43 years happily together. Hope was a member of the Rogue Valley Country Club for over 60 years. She became very involved with the Junior Service League, and served a term as their President. She was an active volunteer, for many years, of the Gold Diggers' Guild (a division of the Southern Oregon Historical Society) and the American Cancer Society. She served for over 30 years as a "Pink Lady" at what was then Rogue Valley Memorial Hospital. Hope loved needlepoint, and played bridge most of her life. She is survived by her husband, Norm; her three children and their families, Dusty and Chuck Smith of Convent Station, N.J., Roxanne and Roger Gault of Piedmont, Calif.; and Scott and Diane Lewis of Coos Bay, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Hope will be remembered for her lovely smile, infectious laughter, and her zest for living.
