A deputy first attempted to pull over 35-year-old Leonard Daniel Johnson in Central Point near Interstate 5 at 10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, said Capt. Nathan Sickler. T he attempted stop was due to a traffic violation, but Sickler declined to elaborate . Johnson reportedly took off, heading south on I-5 with police in pursuit. Sickler said Johnson's vehicle reached 100 mph at one point in the chase. The vehicle crashed near mile marker 29 after about a 4-mile chase. Johnson fled on foot and was last seen running into Bear Creek when deputies lost sight of him. Bear Creek was running extremely high that day following heavy rains. "We don't know where he went," Sickler said. "We don't have any evidence to suggest he's in the creek or out of the creek." Sheriff's deputies, Medford police and Oregon State Police spent several hours Friday and Monday looking for Johnson with K-9 units and portable infrared cameras that can detect heat signatures. "We've been looking all over the area," Sickler said. Johnson has since been entered as a missing person in state and national police databases. Anyone with information about Johnson's whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff's department at 541-774-6800 or 911. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
