Crater High teacher arrested on charges of sexual misconduct with a student Comment By Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 3:19 PM Updated Oct 27, 2015 at 5:03 PM By Teresa Thomas Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 27, 2015 at 3:19 PM Updated Oct 27, 2015 at 5:03 PM » Social News A Crater High School humanities teacher was arrested Monday on charges alleging he sexually abused a female student earlier this year. Central Point police said in a news release Tuesday that they arrested Jeffrey Robert Zundel, 52, Monday afternoon after receiving a report of sexual misconduct between a teacher and student at the school. Zundel was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of second-degree sexual abuse, third-degree sexual abuse and sodomy, and contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor. He posted bail and was released about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday. The victim was a minor at the time of the offense and is a student at the school, said Jackson County District Attorney Beth Heckert. Second-degree sex abuse is a Class C felony, she said. “We will review the police report submitted to us, and we will decide whether charges will be filed,” Heckert said. Zundel is the husband of Michelle Zundel, chief academic officer with the Medford School District and former Ashland High School principal. Jeffrey Zundel teaches English, world studies and photography at Crater Renaissance Academy. Central Point Superintendent Samantha Steele sent a news release saying the district received the sexual misconduct complaint Monday, called the police and placed Jeffrey Zundel on administrative leave. The release said staff receive extensive annual training on staff-student boundaries and sexual misconduct, but after Jeffrey Zundel's arrest, the district is reviewing its training to "determine where it can be strengthened," Steele said in the release. Officials from both school districts declined comment when reached by phone Tuesday. Reach education reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
