Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 26, 2005 Roseburg comes back to defeat Black Tornado SOC Volleyball ROSEBURG — North Medford sent shock waves through Stewart Robertson Memorial gym by downing Roseburg 25-23 in the opening game of a Southern Oregon Conference volleyball match Tuesday. But the Indians regrouped to win three straight games, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18. The victory keeps Roseburg (10-3 SOC) one game ahead of Grants Pass for second place in the SOC. The final regular season game is Thursday. "(North Medford) came in and played solid," Roseburg coach Bruce Myers said. "They plain out-played us that first game." Senior outside Emily Waldron paced Roseburg with 13 kills and 11 digs. The Indians other outside, Kalista Harrison, contributed 12 kills and five digs. But the Black Tornado forced the Indian front-rowers into hitting errors. "North did a great job of blocking," said Myers. "They overloaded and took our outside away from us." Advertisement Roseburg’s middles, Beth Fuller and Tracy Filley, provided nine kills and four blocks, respectively. The Black Tornado had an opportunity to go up 2-1 in games when it took a 20-15 lead in the third set. North got effective performances from junior middle from Lauren Berger (11 blocks, 5 kills) and sophomore outside Whitney Hodnett (14 digs, 7 kills). "I’m real pleased with our girls’ competitiveness," said Myers. "We gutted it up and came back and won it. It’s a big win for us. We needed it to hold on to second place and get some momentum going into the playoffs." ASHLAND 3, EAGLE POINT 2 — At Eagle Point, Eagle Point gave top-ranked Ashland all it could handle before the Grizzlies triumphed 21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 15-6. Mickie Burns (14 kills), Beth Logan (15 kills) and Katie Jolliffe (9 kills) led the way for the Eagles. Ashland got 23 kills each from Jessica Walters and Maddison Thivierge. Ashley Josephson provided a big shift in momentum for the Eagles (5-8 SOC) in the fourth game by providing six blocks. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — Host South Medford pulled within one win of a state playoff berth after defeating Klamath Union 25-19, 25-19, 27-25 in the SOC match. Lauren Koeninger had 17 digs to lead South, which will face North Medford on Thursday with the winner advancing to the playoffs. Kinzie Towry and Karlie Cunningham each chipped in with seven kills, and Chenoa Coviare added four aces for the Panthers (6-7 SOC). GRANTS PASS 3, CRATER 0 — At Grants Pass, Natasha Torgerson and Kim Gonzales led Grants Pass with 12 kills each to beat Crater 26-24, 25-22, 25-20 in SOC play. Ashley Franko had 12 digs for the Cavers (9-4 SOC). The Comets (2-11 SOC) got 15 digs from Haley Hevern and eight from Reanne Allen.
