WHITE CITY White City homeowner starts grass fire, manages to contain it Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted May. 17, 2015 at 5:29 PM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted May. 17, 2015 at 5:29 PM » Social News A small grass fire broke out Sunday afternoon in the 16000 block of Jones Road in White City, but the quick-thinking property owner created a fire line with his tractor so the flames wouldn’t spread. “I don’t think we put any water on it,” said Mike Calhoun, battalion chief for Fire District No. 3. “We really didn’t do much.” The property owner had started a number of different burn piles on his property, then went inside to get a sandwich when the winds picked up, Calhoun said. The man told his wife not to call 911, but she did anyway, Calhoun said. The fire was about a half-acre in size and spread quickly through grass. According to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon, Sunday was a burn day. “I thought the owner was pretty responsible,” Calhoun said. Emergency crews from the fire district and the Oregon Department of Forestry were dispatched at 3:20 p.m., but the tractor had already cut the line by the time they arrived at the property, which is north of Highway 234. Calhoun said that despite the recent rains, the soil on the property was already dry. Firefighters are warning that this season the forests and grasslands could be particularly dry. Already soil in upper elevations has dried out because of the lack of snowfall. “I guess the takeaway is that It is dry out and it didn’t take much to start the fire,” Calhoun said.
