The National Weather Service said the temperature Monday, Feb. 8, in Medford hit 79 degrees, nine degrees warmer than the date's previous record of 70, which was recorded in 1996. The city's official temperature is based on readings taken near the Medford airport. Not only was it the hottest Feb. 8 of all time, it tied a record for the warmest day ever recorded in the month of February. Tuesday's temperature of 68 fell short of the record of 70 degrees set in 2006. A high-pressure ridge that stretches from Idaho to the Southwest U.S. is responsible for the recent, short-lived warmth, weather officials said. A trough is building over the Pacific Ocean, sending weak disturbances inland — the reason for recent cloud cover. Because of that, temperatures are expected to cool a bit, with highs dipping to around 60 by the weekend. "That eventually will send a front in our direction," said meteorologist Marc Spilde, adding a chance of some inland rain comes with the front.
