No. 4 Challengers sweep Chiloquin Prep roundup WHITE CITY -- Tim Alvarez hadn't pitched for over a week, but the 6-foot-4 left-hander was awfully sharp Thursday against Chiloquin. Alvarez struck out 14 during a six-inning shut-out to complete a District 6 doubleheader sweep for the fourth-ranked Challengers at the V.A. Domiciliary. Cascade Christian defeated Chiloquin 14-2 in five innings, then 10-0 in six. "We have a lot of guys who contribute and we play good defense," Cascade Christian coach John Bruce said. "We make good contact. We don't strike out very often. That's the reason we're able to do what we're doing." The undefeated Challengers (17-0, 8-0 Dist. 6) wasted little time in putting Chiloquin in a hole. In the first inning of the opener, Cascade sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs. Alvarez sparked the eight-hit outburst with two doubles and three RBIs. Sophomore side-arm pitcher Bryan Edwards (6-0) limited Chiloquin to three hits and struck out five. And both of Chiloquin's runs were unearned. "He (Edwards) throws a hard sinker so we have a lot of ground outs with him," said Bruce. "He's like a machine, he throws a lot of strikes." Alvarez went 3-for-3 and the Challengers had four other players -- Don Jenkins, Aaron Beamish, Andy Bellamy and Justin McCord -- each with two hits. In game 2, Alvarez (5-0) was overpowering, notching his high strikeout total of the season. "Tim had some pop today and he had good command of his curveball," said Bruce. "He makes it tough on hitters when he's like that." Alvarez added two more hits in the second game along with Nolan Roberts and Nick Ristow. Softball CASCADE CHRISTIAN 14-11, CHILOQUIN 3-1 -- At Chiloquin, Cheryl Gordon struck out 12 batters in the first game as Cascade improved to 7-1 in District 6 play. Laural Kelly stymied the Queens on three hits in the second game that ended after six innings. Gordon had a good day at the plate as well, going 5-for-9, driving in six runs, scoring four and stealing a base. Becky Gettman was 3-for-5, with four walks and three runs. Kelly was 3-for-5, scored four runs, had two RBIs and stole a base. Chiloquin dropped to 0-8 in league play. Kimmelshue, Ashland's Travis Caswell-Stiles and Phoenix's Nick Caplan all carded 80s on the par-70 course. Kimmelshue broke the three-way tie when he parred the first playoff hole Caswell-Stiles took second on the second-playoff hole.
