UP NEXT: Today, 6 p.m. PDT, Medford vs. Lakeside Recovery (Wash.). » Social News CHEYENNE — The Medford Mustangs are back where they wanted to be: in the championship game of the American Legion AAA Northwest Regional. Medford scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on for a 5-4 victory over host Cheyenne Post 6 at Powers Field Friday. The big hit for the Mustangs was a two-run single by left fielder Bryce Rogan. Medford (41-12) is the only undefeated team left in the tournament and is guaranteed a spot in the championship game. It plays Lakeside Recovery out of Bellevue, Washington, at 6 tonight (PDT). Medford beat Lakeside 6-1 in 13 innings to open the tournament Wednesday. Last year, the Mustangs came up one win shy of winning the regional, which would have been their fifth Northwest crown. Nine players from that team are on this year’s squad that is looking for redemption and a trip to the World Series. Cheyenne (54-16) plays Gillette (62-22) at noon (PDT) today in a loser-out game. That is a rematch of last week's Wyoming state championship game. On Friday, Cheyenne trailed 5-2 after six innings, but scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Third baseman Lincoln Trujillo had a run scoring single that cut Medford's lead to 5-3. That sent Medford starting pitcher Colton Westfall to the bench, and Cody Coggins replaced him. Coggins walked a batter and allowed shortstop Ryan Andren to belt a run-scoring single. But Medford's defense bailed it out as it threw out first baseman Dustin Parker at third base after he tried to advance there from first on Andren's hit and throw to the plate. Westfall went 7 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, three earned runs, struck out 11 and walked five. "I was throwing my fastball really good, and that is probably my best pitch," Westfall said. "My curveball was a little off, but I got that back into rhythm eventually. My change-up wasn't that great, but I had to say yes to my fastball." Coggins picked up the save as he struck out two in 1 1/3 innings. He got Cheyenne center fielder Braxton Inniss to fly out to end the game. "(Westfall) made us chase some pitches out of the zone, and we are a little late on some pitches," Post 6 manager Tagg Lain said. "You have to be a little more disciplined about a guy like that. We did get him worn down and a little rally going, but it wasn't quite enough." Medford scored single runs in the bottom of the first and fourth innings. The Mustangs had 10 hits off Sixers starter Grant Storebo, but he and his defense were able to limit the damage. Storebo was pulled after 5 1/3 innings with runners on first and third after he hit a batter and allowed a single. Right fielder Jared Evans drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt prior to Rogan's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, which came off Cheyenne relief pitcher Brock Anderson. Before he left the game, Storebo hit Medford's No. 9 hitter, shortstop Cole Carder. "That was a big inning for us where we didn't do some of the things we needed to get out of it," Lain said. "But every day in this tournament is a new challenge, and we have to meet the challenge (today) and if we do that things will start looking a lot better quick." Rogan was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Tate Cowden was 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Mustangs, who also got two hits from Eric Carlson.
