A couple of concerned citizens called police Saturday after finding a device, presumed to be a pipe bomb wrapped in tape, in a planter box near Sleep Train, 1170 Biddle Road, said Medford police Sgt. Jason Antley. According to a news release, Medford police located the device, which had wires protruding from it, around 5:40 p.m., notified the OSP bomb squad and established a perimeter around it. The McDonald’s in Bear Creek Plaza, as well as the eastbound lane of McAndrews Road, were closed while the bomb squad investigated and detonated the device, which turned out to be a makeshift charger, said Antley “It was a homemade phone charger where they had taken C batteries and taped them up and had wires coming off the terminals,” he said. The device was rendered safe around 8:55 p.m. “As always, the safety of the public is paramount in these types of cases and it is always better to side with caution when dealing with suspicious devices,” the news release said.
