In early January, Hunter was benched early after picking up a foul less than two minutes into the game. Then in about the same time frame at the start of the second half, she recorded a 3-pointer, rebound and assist to help the Beavers quickly push their lead to double digits. Hunter again flashed that versatility in a home blowout over the Women of Troy last weekend, stuffing the box score with 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and just one turnover. But perhaps the most important stat? Zero fouls. Hunter is often an overlooked piece of this seventh-ranked OSU squad to outsiders, with Ruth Hamblin ruling the paint and Sydney Wiese knocking down 3-pointers and Jamie Weisner's recent scoring tear. Yet Hunter, a junior forward, combines supreme athleticism and smarts to make an impact in practically every phase of the game. And Hunter channeling her constant burst of energy and emotion in the right way has been one of OSU's most positive-yet-underrated developments during conference play, as the Beavers (20-2, 10-1 Pac-12) continue to refine themselves as national contenders heading into today's matchup with Washington State in Pullman, Wash. "She'll dive on any pile. She's gonna rip the ball from anyone," coach Scott Rueck said of Hunter. "She wants to win so bad. It's just dialing back and understanding when you have to hold back from fouling. "When you're changing who a person is, it's hard." Rueck sees a lot of himself in Hunter. That brand of intense competitiveness — the kind one can easily read on Hunter's face throughout any OSU game — has been a "hurdle" throughout Rueck's playing and coaching career, he acknowledges. So Hunter and Rueck have sat down for many conversations and film sessions, discussing the technical aspects of playing smart position defense but also just the proper moments to slightly hold back. "It's really difficult for a player like her who is so aggressive," Rueck said. "That's what I love about her. She's fearless." Added Hunter: "I don't like to lose. I've always been like that. I think you have to give energy to play well and go after everything ... Sometimes you've got to just anticipate and know what you have to do. Thinking a step ahead, 'If (the ball is) going there, it's probably not mine.'" When Hunter stays on the floor, her wide-ranging skill set makes her an influential playmaker. She's always a threat to score in double digits. She's a savvy distributor for her 6-foot-3 size and crashes the boards to give OSU extra possessions, ranking second on the team in both assists (three per game) and rebounding (7.1 per game). On a team with a lot of quiet leadership, she is the most consistent talker on the floor. She even occasionally takes on some point guard responsibilities, inbounding the ball, helping bring it up the court or getting it first in certain offensive sets. "There's really nothing that she doesn't have her fingers on," Rueck said. "She has such an impact in so many different ways ... She can make plays that other players just can't make. She's such a great athlete and has such great instincts and a nose from the ball." Rueck always saw that potential in Hunter, even when she primarily played with her back to the basket at McNary High in Keizer. Yet she started to develop her face-up game heading into her senior season and has extended her perimeter game even more at OSU. She's currently shooting 33.3 percent from 3-point distance, an added weapon Rueck believes often makes the Beavers "un-guardable." Hunter's emotions still pop up occasionally, like when she fiercely clapped her hands together in frustration after missing a pair of second-half free throws against USC last week. That performance at the foul line (1-of-6), however, was essentially the only blemish on her stat line. The fact that she's consistently keeping herself in games to roll up those numbers is even more important. Rueck proclaimed back in early January that he looked forward to the day he could play Hunter for all 40 minutes if he wanted to. The coach doesn't need to dream about that anymore. "I've really been proud of her how she's embraced it," Rueck said. "She's somebody that, freshman year, you couldn't always count on her. Now, you can count on Deven."
