Twenty will make more than $95,000 and eight will make more than $100,000. New Superintendent Brian Shumate, making $200,000 annually, believes that now his kitchen cabinet of directors need more. Something is awry. Oregon is starved for money and has no coherent formula for economic development and capital formation which pays for these exorbitant salaries. Our tax code, heavy on income and capital gains, is disproportionate to the needs of education and the state. Our student achievement does not seem to justify such profligacy as it's not the high achievers we are targeting, it's the middle and low achievers. American history by state standards and student understanding looks to be downgraded with not enough time in the day to be thorough.That 's why kids today don't know who the first seven presidents were and thought or what a grand jury does. The feds with Common Core are intruding. Teachers who are on the front line must feel shafted. They don't have tools, money or supplies, however they get the blame. We need to completely rethink our education system before the public gets wind and turns into Scrooge before Christmas. Joel Marks, Medford Impeach Obama There are some people who say Obama should not be impeached. "Leave him alone," they say. Really? When is he going to leave the rest of the world alone? Obama, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, overthrows the government in Libya without congressional approval, and he pushes the restart button on the Cold War with Russia 25 years later. Dick Cheney has got nothing on Obama when it comes to spying on the American people. If that isn't bad enough, the Obama administration has even been caught spying on The Associated Press. President Obama is even on record saying that he does not have the legal authority to give amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, and yet he goes ahead and does it anyway. Maybe Obama did that because he and his fellow democrats are a bunch of sore losers. Impeach Obama now! Joe Thomas, Brookings Cochran has rights God gives us free will and freedom of choice. Sgt. Cochran chooses to have faith and believe in God's word. Ms. Caren Caldwell said, "He is a public employee. If he has certain beliefs that make it difficult to uphold the rights of people in the county, I think that is a problem." Sgt. Cochran took an oath to serve and protect everyone. He stated, "the Bible should be your guide for a correctly run life." I bet he lets the following scripture guide him as well, Colossians 3:23-24, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Sgt. Cochran's ability to perform his job should not be scrutinized because he exercised his freedom of speech on his personal time. As a public entity, the Sheriff's department has a responsibility to conform to principles set forth in our First Amendment. A public employee should be able to exercise his constitutional right as an active player in our democracy and not just a passive spectator.
