He could never win the nomination, but the group of announced and prospective candidates is so weak and vanilla that Biden’s special brand of gaffe-tastic campaigning would be a welcome addition to the Hillary Clinton nomination parade. Clinton is the presumptive candidate, and until someone knocks her off of her perch, she will spend most of her weekends trying to figure out which also-ran will also get to run with her on the ticket. In addition to Biden, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, California Gov. Jerry Brown, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Bernie Sanders (who could run with any number of parties), and a few other names you don’t know are all considering a run for the highest office in the land. Biden and Clinton are in the best position to win the candidacy but the worst position to run. With Clinton’s history and position within Barack Obama’s cabinet, she can’t exactly make the claim that her administration would feature any differences more significant than the email address of the president … and since she will use her own private account, even that may not be that different. With her Monday morning revelation that the Clinton Foundation made mistakes when it comes to how much money it received, from whom it was received and how it was reported, the list of things that will be mentioned in attack ads from the right just keeps growing. Biden is another candidate who would have trouble running away from Obama’s legacy. His campaign website from 2008 features a platform that is in lock step with Obama. Of course, spending the last eight years in the vice president’s residence at the United States Naval Observatory also ties him as closely to Obama’s policies and procedures as anyone could be. But Obama is the smallest problem a Biden campaign would have. There is never any way to guess what he will do on the trail. Will he awkwardly give a creepy shoulder rub to someone else’s wife while he whispers in her ear? Will he tell a paralyzed man to stand up and let the crowd honor him? Will he strike fear in the traveling public by insinuating that there is incredible danger in one of our neighboring countries? You just never know. But Biden is a lot of fun in debates. He is considered to have beaten Sarah Palin in 2008 and Paul Ryan in 2012. He is also famous for lines about Rudy Giuliani like saying he is the least qualified man to run for president since George W. Bush and that the former mayor of New York thinks every sentence has three parts, “the noun, the verb and 9/11.” Biden could never win the candidacy but he would at least make the race interesting and fun. Right now you have Clinton assuming she is going to win, a long list of candidates who wish they could win and Warren who is waiting for enough people to beg her to run that she can win the nomination by acclamation. There is no drama in that storyline. There are no great jokes, one-liners or gaffes coming from that group. America needs Biden or the Democratic campaign will be almost impossible to follow. Maybe if Clinton goes ahead to win, she can keep crazy uncle Joe on the ballot as her running-mate. Now that would be a storyline.
