The Black Tornado lost to the host Indians, 5-2, in the championship game. North Medford, which dropped all three pool play games on Saturday, rebounded Sunday to beat the Springfield Killer Bees, 9-6, and the Tigard Thunder, 3-2, to advance to the title game of the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Amanda Wolfe belted a three-run home run late in the game to put North Medford ahead for good against Springfield. Taylor Williamson and Brandi Johnson led the Black Tornado with six hits apiece over the weekend, while Sara Speziale added five hits. Mikayla Meerten was the winning pitcher in both contests Sunday. Advertisement The North Medford Black Tornado 14-and-under ASA Fast Pitch Softball team defeated the Cherry City Crush of the Dalles 4-2 to win the High Desert Fast Pitch Tournament championship in Redmond this weekend. The Black Tornado improved their overall record to 20-1 after outscoring their opponents 44-4 and finishing 5-0. Pitcher Taylor Schmidt accounted for four of the Black Tornado’s five wins and went 10-17 from the plate with 12 RBIs. Alana Coronado went 9-of-14, while Nikki Stevens and Nikki Jones each had six hits. North Idaho College pitcher Darci Byrne, a former South Medford standout, earned All-Scenic West Athletic Conference first-team honors. Byrne had 102 strikeouts and posted a 2.56 ERA in 134 innings of work. Cycling Medford’s Maurice Torano , 39, won the masters division of the Oregon State Cycling Championships held in Bend on Sunday. The 70-mile road race featured 24 competitors in the masters division for cyclists ages 30-39. Bowling Jason Bieghler and Dave Nosack each rolled 290 games recently at Lava Lanes. Golf Craig Galpern and Gary McTevia each had a hole-in-one at Rogue Valley Country Club on May 1. Galpern’s ace came on the par-4, 154-yard fourth hole with an 8-iron witnessed by Mike Naumes, Dave Schott and Chuck Wiley. McTevia used a 5-wood on the 188-yard 13th hole. The shot was witnessed by Richard Doyle. Michael J. Hunt posted his first-ever hole-in-one on the par-3, 154-yard fourth hole at Quail Point Golf Course with his 7-iron on May 7. The shot was witnessed by his Grants Pass High School teammates.
