SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: New law modernizes voter registration in Oregon Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 10, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 10, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Is it true Oregon has automatic voter registration through the DMV now? — Randy L., Medford Oregon's new voter registration law, Oregon Motor Voter, took effect Jan. 1, 2016. The law is an easy and convenient way for more Oregonians to become registered voters. According to the Oregon Secretary of State website, sos.oregon.gov , automatic voter registration is available if you're eligible to register to vote when "you apply for your original, renewal, or replacement license, permit, or ID card at the DMV." But, to register to vote in the state of Oregon, you must be a U.S. citizen, Oregon resident and at least 17 years old. Once you visit the DMV, the voter process begins. You'll receive a card with a prepaid postage envelope in the mail from the Oregon State Elections Office. You can do three things with this card. Your first choice is to do nothing, and you will be registered to vote as a nonaffiliated voter. Or you can choose a political party by sending back the card. Last, you could use the card to opt-out, thereby declining to be registered to vote. Oregon is the first state with automatic voter registration, and this move should help expand access to voting.
