Police arrested Scott B. Gildard, 42, of Grants Pass, on charges of aggravated theft, five counts of first-degree theft and five counts of second-degree theft, said Lt. Mike Moran. Last month, college officials noticed that calculators, priced at $118 and $130 each, were disappearing from the campus bookstore. When police began investigating, they found pawn shop records that showed Gildard had pawned at least 100 calculators at Valley Pawn & Trading, 123 S. Riverside Ave., near the college’s downtown campus, between March and December, Moran said. Each stolen calculator could result in a second-degree-theft charge and each incident of pawning a stolen calculator could result in a first-degree-theft charge, Moran explained. Rather than file hundreds of charges, police opted to file just a handful of charges and add an aggravated theft charge to reflect the ongoing nature of the alleged crime spree. Gildard worked a shift that started at 4 a.m. and ended at noon, so police believe he could have entered the bookstore and taken the calculators while he was alone in the building early in the morning. Medford police arrested him at home in Grants Pass Friday, Moran said. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained Saturday night on $90,000 bail. The investigation continues to see if anyone else was involved in the thefts, Moran said.
