Many kids don’t have health coverage, don’t have reliable transportation, don’t have a primary care provider and need dental and vision exams, she said. “We can do vision or dental screenings, but we have to refer students to a doctor for further assessment,” she said. And, unfortunately, students and parents don’t always follow through. This school year, the Medford School District tasked a committee of school nurses, students, teachers, school administrators, parents and representatives from community organizations with evaluating the need for an on-site health center at one of its three high schools. There currently are small health rooms at each school and on-site health centers, sponsored by La Clinica, at Jackson, Washington and Oak Grove elementary schools. In 2014, 3,400 visits were made to those three health centers, said Julie Wurth, communications director for La Clinica. North Medford and Central Medford high schools also have access to La Clinica’s mobile health unit a half day each week. Last year, the district received a $30,000 planning grant from Oregon Health Authority to research the feasibility and demand for a permanent health center at one of the high schools. So far, the committee has collected and reviewed data on risk factors affecting students countywide and at each of the high schools; visited the high schools to determine possible locations for a health center; and toured school-based health centers in Central Point. And next week, the district will host two public forums and distribute surveys to parents, community members and eighth- through 12th-grade students. A forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in The Commons at North Medford High School and another from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in Room A156 at South Medford High School. “The whole premise is that healthy kids attend school and do better in school, which ultimately increases educational outcomes,” said Tania Tong, Medford’s supervisor of student services. The center, Tong said, would give students access to basic medical, dental, mental health and preventative care and education and be staffed by a receptionist, registered nurse, nurse practitioner and mental health counselor. “It’s one-stop shopping so students can get all the services they need at one location — education, health and social services,” Tong said. South Medford High School junior Tyler Seutter, a member of the committee, said an off-campus doctor’s appointment for a student means missing two or more classes and having to play catch-up the rest of the week. Students also need access to birth control, he said. “It’s important to the student body to have a center that advocates for a healthy lifestyle physically, mentally and sexually,” he said. Because the center would be publicly funded, some health services would be mandated, while others, such as dispensing contraception, could be provided on site or referred off-site. The school board will have the ultimate say in services provided at the center, Tong said. Later this spring, the committee will submit its report to the school board, which will vote. If the school board approves the health center, the state may provide a $60,000 developmental grant, which the district would have to supplement with additional grants, fundraisers and district dollars, said Tong. “The cost of operating the health center would be roughly $250,000 to $300,000 a year,” she added.  Reach reporter Teresa Thomas at 541-776-4497 or [email protected] .
