Bramwell, representative of the Western Sugar company, who contemplate the construction of a  $600,000 beet sugar factory in the valley, and were sent to Portland last night for saccharine tests. Mr. Bramwell left last night for Portland. He said the beets were in a high state of development, and that the tests, if they came up to his expectations, would result in the sending of more sugar beet experts to this section for final inspection. According to tests made five weeks ago, Mr. Bramwell said, Rogue river beets run as high as 17 percent saccharine. This is better than the prize sugar beets of Idaho and Utah. Mr. Bramwell will return to Medford next week and open offices in this city, and a campaign will be launched for sugar beet acreage, along systematic lines. One of the half-grown beets collected yesterday weighed 10 pounds, with five pounds additional for top. SCHONER PRODUCES NEW ROSE APPLE Father Schoner, known as the Wizard of Brooks, where he was pastor of the little Catholic church, has produced a "rose apple," a small fruit produced by crossing the Spitzenburg apple with the wild rose of Oregon. The fruit is useful in making marmalades and jellies, and the tree which he has secured is pronounced one of the most ornamental types for lawns. From experiments conducted the past several years, Father Schoner has produced a garden pea, the hull of which is edible as well as the peas themselves. The term of the Brooks-pastorate will soon end, and the plant wizard has been invited to a number of communities. California is trying to get him, and an effort is being made to have him locate in Portland, where he can devote his entire time to raising new plants. INCENDIARIES SET 25 FOREST BLAZES Firebugs operating in the Butte Falls district Friday afternoon set 25 fires within an hour. The blazes were discovered before they gained headway. The area affected contains some of the most valuable timber in Southern Oregon. The property is owned by the Butte Falls Timber company. Many homesteads also came under the work of the firebug. Monday 20 incendiary fires were set out in the Trail district.
