South Medford students stage walk out Thursday Feb 22, 2018 at 5:16 PM Feb 22, 2018 at 5:16 PM Local report A few dozen students staged a walkout from South Medford High School Wednesday afternoon in response to the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida, that left 17 students and staff dead, local media reported. Three sophomores identified themselves as the demonstration's organizers, saying they had gone to about 15 classrooms inviting students to join in a demonstration, KDRV reported. The students stayed outside of their school for several hours, holding posters with various messages such as "stop school shootings," and chanting, "keep us safe." Some students told reporters they would walk out again in the coming days. Spokeswoman for the Medford School District Natalie Hurd said she had not been aware of any plans to continue protests, adding that "students have the right to peacefully protest." Schools are required to mark students absent if they miss the majority or all of a class, but Hurd said the district is "not going to encourage or discourage (the protests) either way." She said district officials and school administrators discussed plans Wednesday to meet with students or hold forums for them to discuss their concerns.
