Most people do not know that the Soviet Union was a communist country, not a socialistic country. There is a big difference between the two: Socialism is right in between communism and capitalism. Virtually all European governments are socialistic democracies. They provide socialistic services such as: healthcare, drug price controls, working hours, paid vacation and sick time, time off for expectant parents, free higher education. We here are constantly told that communism and socialism are the same. They definitely are not! All systems have their problems and so does our form of capitalism! Heide Seeman Medford Compare the risk What I don't hear in the "debate" about vaccinations and "Vaxxed" is any mathematical analysis of the risks. Is there a risk in vaccinating? Is there a risk in not vaccinating? Which is the greater risk? We know that measles, mumps and rubella cause great harm, even death. We know that we don't experience that harm because vaccinations have been so effective. We know that autism is a terrible disease. There is a controversy about whether vaccination causes autism. There is no controversy over whether vaccination prevents measles, mumps and rubella. Even if some kids who get vaccinated get autism they don't get measles, mumps and rubella. I took that risk with my kids and I'd do it again. My kids didn't get measles, etc! Even if there is a downside to vaccinating, it is less than the downside of not vaccinating. Dan Fischer Ashland Actor made the play What a surprise. I didn't know what to expect at OSF's production of "Viet Gone" at the Thomas Theatre. James Ryen, who plays Quang, was a total delight with his honesty, his shyness in spite of being a hunk and his martial arts skills, dancing and singing. Such a versatile actor, who made the dark comedy play a revelation. Kudos to Ryen. Mary Zvonek Jacksonville An act of kindness It was a Wednesday. With errands to run, my husband, Tom, and I headed to Medford from Shady Cove. We decided to treat ourselves and have breakfast at Denny's in Medford, service great, food good. We are in our 70s, seniors. As we were nearing the end of our meal, our server came forward with an offer of coffee, and then asked if we had noticed the lady with the child sitting across from us. I was aware that people were in the booth, but that was all. Our server explained that we would not be receiving a "check" for our meal as the lady had paid for our breakfast. The lady's request was that we not be told until she had left the restaurant. We were speechless. Made our day. Tom and I thank you, dear lady. In my little corner of the world, I witnessed an act of kindness. Geri Worley Shady Cove Shame on builders So the Southern Oregon Builders Association is threatened by Hope Village. Let’s see, that’s 12 to 14 8-foot-by-10-foot houses with no water or electricity being built in a commercial-zoned section of Medford to safely house the homeless. Unbelievable and shame on the association!
