Hot and dry conditions contributed to the spread of the fire which began Thursday for yet determined reasons, South Central Oregon Incident Management reported. A high of 76 degrees was expected with 19 percent humidity. Although there is some wind out of the northwest, it had little impact on firefighting efforts Sunday, said SCOIM spokesperson Lucinda Nolan. "Right now, the wind is not supposed to be a whole lot of threat," Nolan said. "It's the sun's heat on the fire all day that will cause it to kick up and increase fire activity." This is the third fire in the remote southwest corner of Crater Lake National Park since 1994. A passing thunderstorm on July 21, 2006, ignited the Bybee, which engulfed 2,930 acres. The National Park Service allowed the fire at the 5,500-foot elevation level to spread naturally for 12 weeks. The fire died out three months later, when autumn weather patterns snuffed it out. Areas of the 2006 Bybee fire where the timber did not burn, greatly increased potential for the present incidence to grow with possible crown runs, the SCOIM said. "Right now we are fully working to suppression and bringing in every available resource to stop the fire," Nolan said. Firefighters are attempting to keep the fire east of the Pacific Crest Trail, south of the Lightning Springs Trail, west of the Crater lake Rim Drive in a proposed Rogue River watershed wilderness area. At present the, there is 5 percent containment with 183 people battling the fire, including six handcrews, along with two water tenders, an engine and four helicopters. Fire danger remains high, and park visitors should be aware of their surroundings and prepared for changing conditions. The Pacific Crest Trail is closed from Dutton Creek Camp north to the PCT parking lot on North Entrance Road. PCT hikers use Dutton Creek Trail to the Rim Trail as an alternate route. Lightning Springs Trail and backcountry camp are closed.
