It's all shuttered and fenced off. It looks closed, what happened? — Jackie A., Eagle Point Seattle-based Darigold announced back in January it was closing the milk-processing plant near Rogue Valley Mall. The plant was shuttered at the end of February, putting 29 employees out of work, and ending a long run that began for what was first known as Jorgensen's Dairy in the 1940s. At one time, the dairy produced ice cream, cottage cheese and butter. Mayflower Farms of Portland bought the dairy in the spring of 1967. Darigold, now the nation's fourth-largest dairy cooperative based on milk volume with annual revenue of more than $2 billion, acquired the plant in the 1980s. Although Darigold poured a lot of money into upgrades in recent years, the company's board didn't see the long-term benefits. "The need to significantly upgrade the facility to maintain compliance with food safety, employee safety and environmental regulations, and the plant’s distance from its core markets, among other reasons, led to the decision to close the plant," Darigold said in a news release. Darigold still operates 11 other processing plants in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. The nearest to the Rogue Valley, however, is now in Portland.
