If you don't want another treaty to make it easier for big corporations to ship our jobs overseas and flood our country with unsafe imported food, and keep lower-cost generic drugs off the market, and empower foreign corporations to attack our environmental and health safeguards, and ban Buy American policies needed to create green jobs, and allow corporations to roll back Wall Street reforms, and sneak in SOPA-like threats to Internet freedom, and to undermine human rights, then you can vote against the TPP by voting For Kevin Stine for the Democratic nomination for Senate. This is because Ron Wyden has sold out big-time to corporate interests and has been a major champion for passing the TPP. It’s time for Mr. Sell-Out Wyden to go. Vote for Kevin Stine for the Senate, and take our country back. Eli Dumitru Medford Crain has an impact Headlines about child abuse, inadequate foster care, drug addiction, victims of criminal behavior and other heart-wrenching stories grab our attention and leave us asking what to do. Re-electing Patricia Crain as judge of the Circuit Court is one action we can take that will have an impact. Judge Crain has maintained a crucial role in improving our community. I've observed her many times. Safety issues of children are paramount in her decision-making. She holds parents accountable in the strongest possible way. She leads in coordinating efforts of multiple agencies that intersect in the courtroom. She understands the nature of human dysfunction and through the court process is experienced with breaking the cycle of generational abuse thereby helping families to heal, lives to be saved, and tax dollars to be used more efficiently. The best choice for our children, our families, and the community is Judge Patricia Crain. Melinda Stephens-Bukey Ashland Supporting Crain I support Judge Crain for Circuit Court judge based on both her continuous effort and exemplary work ethic. Judge Crain is a tireless and dedicated Circuit Court judge that has had a positive impact on the community in which she serves. She holds individuals accountable, works towards positive behavioral changes and ensures justice for all. Her efforts are more than worthy of re-election. I endorse Judge Crain for re-election to the Circuit Court and urge others to do the same. Tim George Medford Economics killed LNG The proposal for a natural gas pipeline with an LNG terminal at Warrenton (near Astoria) has been withdrawn. (Mail Tribune, April 16, page A4; more at http://www.dailyastorian.com/Free/20160415/oregon-lng-withdraws-warrenton-project ) Opponents of this project are celebrating the outcome as a victory for their activism, and both Governor Brown and Senator Wyden have weighed in with comments in the same spirit. Permits for the similar Jordan Cove project at Coos Bay had already been denied by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In its editorial of March 18, the Mail Tribune reacted with “shock and awe” that the voices of the opponents had been heard. It’s my guess that economics has played a larger role than activism. Both ill-conceived proposals were drawn up while the shale-fracking bubble was expanding. Now that it’s deflating, the “market need” for those projects is disappearing. If either had been built by now, it would soon be useless. People who might have financed the construction should be grateful to the opponents for helping the wheels of government to grind slowly.
