Junior Shea Washington became the school’s first NAIA Div. II all-tournament selection and its initial multiple-year All-American. Meanwhile, senior guard Brad Coen garnered Academic All- American status, and the Raiders received the national tournament Sportsmanship Award. Western Baptist junior Eric Fiegi, a former South Medford standout, and Oregon Tech guard Levell Hesia also made the first team. Washington, a 6-foot-7 power forward from Springfield, became one of 10 all-tourney performers after leading the 32-team fracas in scoring (26.3 in three games) and finishing fourth for blocks (2.0), fifth for field goal percentage (.622) and sixth for free throw percentage (.880). The Cascade Conference MVP compiled his 15th double-double of the season with a 30-point, 12-rebound extravaganza against St. Ambrose, Iowa in the opening round. Washington, who received second-team All-American distinction last year, led Southern in scoring the final 16 games of the season. Only the fourth player in school history to average over 20 points, Washington assembled the school’s highest season scoring clip since 1995, and he finished second on season charts with 667 points, including program records for free throw makes (215) and attempts (276). Since transferring from Montana State following the 2002-03 school year, Washington has zoomed to No. 9 on the SOU’s career scoring list — only 342 away from surpassing Tom Chipps’ top mark of 1,648 established between 1997 and 2001. He is also 19 blocks away and 340 rebounds from two other career records. Coen, a 6-foot-5 wing from Roseburg, received the NAIA/Daktronics Scholar-Athlete award as a result of maintaining over a 3.5 cumulative grade-point average, and will complete his bachelor’s degree in Education this week. Arguably the most improved player in Brian McDermott’s nine-year tenure as Raider head coach, the four-year letterwinner was named one of the league’s top defenders and finished his career No. 5 on SOU’s career list with 133 3-point makes, including 68 as a senior. Fiegi, who averaged 27 points per game, paced the Cascade Collegiate Conference this season with 91 blocked shots — a new single-season record at Western Baptist. The 6-foot-9 post is the program’s career-leading shot blocker with 196. He was second in the conference in rebounds (9.3) per game and field goal (.599) percentage this year. Fiegi shot 67 percent from the line and had 32 assists and 38 steals. Fiegi is now fourth at Western Baptist in career points (2,344), rebounds (850), field goals (918) and free throws (507).
