South Medford wrestlers fare well in Hawaii tourney By FRANK SILOW HONOLULU, Hawaii -- South Medford had an impressive start during the first round of the two-day McKinley Tiger Wrestling Tournament Friday at McKinley High School on the big island. The Panthers won eight of 10 matches, including six by falls, in the 12-team tournament. "Winning that last dual meet against Roseburg before we left got our guys pumped up," said South Medford coach Ken Wharry. "Our kids really came through." Wharry was particularly pleased with a pair of sophomores -- Ian Rasmussen (112) and Ben Vandagrift (189) -- who posted pins. Other South wrestlers to win by fall were Jacob Bean (135), Ken Myers (140), Cory Sweet (145) and T.J. Winningham (152). Mike Murphy (171) received a first round bye. 112 -- Ian Rasmussen, SM, pinned Kalanituu, 3:05; 119 -- Galloway d. Matt McCoy, SM, 12-8; 125 -- Donny Jackson, SM, injury default over Kahana; 135 -- Jacob Bean, SM, pinned Hallolau, 3:16; 140 -- Ken Myers, SM, pinned Yockeman, 1:58; 145 -- Cory Sweet, SM, pinned Candra, 1:28. 152 -- T.J, Winningham, SM, pinned Pautil, 3:22; 160 -- Udagawa pinned J.J. Long, SM, 1:33; 171 -- Mike Murphy, SM, bye; 189 -- Ben Vandagrift, SM, pinned Carpenter, 1:25; 215 -- Ian Taylor, SM, d. Marcial, 8-1.
