Police Chief Tim George said 21-year-old Justinn Casaday and 17-year-old Mason Maloney are facing charges of attempted first-degree assault, unlawful use of a dangerous weapon, recklessly endangering, two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and possession and delivery of methamphetamine. Casaday is also facing a charge of heroin possession. "The thing I'm most proud of here is the effort," George said. "Within 75 hours of the first report, we have both people in custody." Casaday and Maloney were arrested in connection with shots fired at a home and business between 3 and 8 a.m. Monday. At the first shooting, reported shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Boardman Street, several rounds went through a bedroom normally occupied by an infant child in a crib. Police say the shots missed the home's lone sleeping occupant by mere inches. In the second incident, dispatched a half hour later, police found rounds had been fired through the front windows of Advanced TV and Video on Court Street, about 250 feet from the Boardman Street home. Nobody was inside the business at the time of the shooting. Medford police called in forensic specialists from the Oregon State Police crime lab to help with the crime scene investigation. George said the resident of the Boardman Street home had reported chasing off a group he suspected were dealing drugs in front of his house just hours before the first shooting. "There was some type of verbal altercation between the initial victim at the residence on Boardman Street and three males and a female," George said. According to police, the resident described the vehicle they left in as a four-door Cadillac sedan. George said a patrol officer spotted a white Cadillac sedan at the scene of another shots-fired call Tuesday evening, near the intersection of Beatty and Manzanita streets, and took down a license plate which came back to Casaday. After locating the car in west Medford Wednesday, detectives from the department's Criminal Investigations Section and the Medford Area Drug and Gang Enforcement Team began surveillance. Investigators say they finally stopped the car on West Jackson Street near the railroad tracks after they began to suspect it was involved in drug sales. George said Casaday, who was driving the car, had heroin in his possession and was arrested.  After getting a search warrant for the car, police found about 3 ounces of meth, a 9 mm handgun and a .30-30 rifle, along with numerous rounds and spent shell casings, George said. He said he couldn't say which of the weapons were believed to have been used in the shootings, but did say there were similarities between rounds found in the car and bullets recovered from the Boardman Street home. Maloney was released at the scene, but George said further investigation led police to believe he was their second suspect, and they arrested him at noon Thursday at the Taco Bell on East Jackson Street without incident. George said the case is still under investigation, but that it doesn't appear to be gang-related. "The (shootings) we've had prior to this one in the past six to 12 months seemed to have some kind of gang connection, but this one, on face, doesn't," he said. Casady is lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $70,000 bail. Maloney is being held in the county's juvenile detention facility.
