Religion news: Animal sacrifice at Nepal festival continues, despite protests Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 12:01 AM Posted Dec. 4, 2014 at 12:01 AM » Social News WEEK IN RELIGION Despite animal rights protesters’ efforts, the tradition of mass animal sacrifice at the Gadhimai festival in Bariyarpur, Nepal, continued Nov. 28. The annual Hindu festival honoring the Hindu goddess Gadhimai draws millions of worshippers each year, and thousands of buffaloes, sheep, birds and goats are killed as an offering during the event. Thousands of the visitors come across the border from India, where many areas have banned animal sacrifice. Opponents say the festival promotes animal cruelty, and that the carcasses left in the streets to rot are a major health concern. They have shared videos and images from the festival in an attempt to diminish its popularity. Potentially due to their campaign, the number of animals slaughtered during the festival has dropped to around 5,000, nearly half of the total from the last festival, held in 2009. SURVEY SAYS A recent survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and the American Academy of Religion shows that major divides exist between religious groups and where climate change is concerned. Respondents who identified as white evangelicals were most skeptical of climate change, while hispanic Catholics were the religious group most concerned about the issue. GOOD BOOK? “The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope,” by Austen Ivereigh An expansive and deeply contextual work, at its heart The Great Reformer is about the intersection of faith and politics — the tension between the pope’s innovative vision for the Church and the obstacles he faces in an institution still strongly defined by its conservative past. Based on extensive interviews in Argentina and years of study of the Catholic Church, Ivereigh tells the story not only of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the remarkable man whose background and total commitment to the discernment of God’s will transformed him into Pope Francis — but the story of why the Catholic Church chose him as their leader. — Henry Holt & Co.
