Medford police reported Thursday that Keith Avant, 39, was cited and released for initiating a false report after investigators discovered he lied to officers when he reported the wheelchair stolen. Police said the wheelchair, which rides on treads and is powered by a small Yamaha generator, had been donated to Avant because of disabilities resulting from his military service. Avant told police it had been stolen out of the back of his truck at his home in the 2500 block of Crater Lake Avenue. Police reported that Avant had actually traded the wheelchair to a friend for other property. Initiating a false report is a Class A misdemeanor, and Oregon law requires that the sentence, upon conviction, include repayment of the costs of the investigation. Police said they would also be working with Avant to return all cash donations he'd received since reporting the wheelchair stolen.
