Medford police arrested Eric One Ziegler, 30, Saturday afternoon after getting a CrimeStoppers tip that he was at a downtown motel, Lt. Tim George said. A tipster reported that Ziegler was at the Cascade Inn Motel. As officers approached the motel at 816 N. Riverside Ave., Ziegler was standing out front and ran, George said. Officers chased him and arrested him in the 700 block of Riverside Avenue around 3:40 p.m. Police and Jackson County sheriff’s detectives had teamed up to track the similar thefts that were happening all over the county in recent months and believed one man was responsible. The thief staked out parking lots, broke into cars during the day and stole purses, wallets and other items left in vehicles. He and female accomplices then used the identification, checks and credit cards to go on shopping sprees. Investigators say they linked the crimes to Ziegler, who has a lengthy record of theft and drug charges and has been arrested numerous times in the past six months. "We would see peaks and valleys in the number of car clouts depending on when he was in jail," sheriff’s Detective Colin Fagan said. Advertisement Under a court-ordered system the jail uses to determine which inmates will be released to prevent overcrowding, Ziegler’s property crimes weren’t serious enough to keep him in jail. Last week, as investigators moved in, Sheriff Mike Winters ordered the Jackson County Jail to keep Ziegler in custody as a matter of public safety should he be arrested, Fagan said. "We’re definitely relieved to have him in custody," George said. "If he is in custody, we will see the property-crime rate drop." Medford police suspected Ziegler in at least 60 car clouts in the past two months. Investigators linked Ziegler to car break-ins and thefts that happened between June 2003 and Saturday morning. They allege he and accomplices used stolen checks and credit cards and pawned items up and down Interstate 5 from Redding to Eugene. Police arrested one of those alleged accomplices, Tina Louise Parshall, 26, of the 300 block of Joseph Circle, Gold Hill, Friday night. She remained in jail Saturday night on 57 charges related to the thefts with bail set at $241,000. Investigators will charge Ziegler with similar charges, as well as a no-bail probation violation warrant.
