I heard they disbanded after the hospital merged with Asante. — Bill, Ashland Rumors of the death of the Pink Ladies organization have been greatly exaggerated. The women volunteers who had a history of dressing in pink are still helping on multiple fronts at Asante Ashland Community Hospital, according Sheila Clough, chief executive officer of the hospital. "The Pink Ladies didn't go away," she said. Auxiliary groups across the nation operated as independent companies providing volunteers to hospitals. Many are transitioning into volunteer organizations, Clough said. "It became a burden on auxiliary groups to run as a business," she said. After a vote by the local Pink Ladies board of directors, the group has switched from being an auxiliary to a operating as a department of the hospital, Clough said. The hospital is now providing administrative functions, freeing up the women to focus on their volunteer activities — which range from running the hospital gift shop to knitting hats for babies to aiding patients, she said. "The volunteers get to do what they love," Clough said. The financially struggling Ashland hospital merged with Asante in 2013.
