K.C. William Blunt, 24, admitted to robbing the Evergreen Federal Bank at 501 Crater Lake Ave. on Feb. 24 and fleeing with more than $11,000 cash. More than $8,000 of the stolen money has been recovered, and Blunt was ordered to pay restitution for the remainder. Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz said the robbery traumatized the teller, who did not attend the court hearing. "She's actually leaving at least this branch," Markiewicz said. Blunt denied Friday that he had threatened the teller, saying his note only contained specific instructions for his demands. Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia rebuffed the claim during sentencing. "Did you think she gave you that money because you're a nice guy?" Mejia said. Blunt's note read, "Give me all the cash in the till. No marked bills, no dye packs, do not call duress until I've left," according to the District Attorney's Office. The teller read the note and complied. Blunt then fled on foot on Crater Lake Avenue toward East Main Street. Medford police's use of social media and individuals' tips led to Blunt's capture at the Seven Feathers Casino blackjack table early the next morning. Photos of Blunt captured through surveillance footage were posted on Medford Police Department's Facebook page within an hour of the robbery. The post led to a tip from one witness who observed Blunt driving a green Acura Integra on Hillcrest Drive near the crime. An officer observed the car in the area and took the vehicle plate number. The car was registered to Blunt's parents in the 2200 block of Greenbrook Drive in Medford. The information corroborated a separate tip naming Blunt. Police recovered $1,200 at Blunt's parents' home the day of the robbery. Although Blunt wasn't home, police towed away a trailer on the property where he was living. After executing a search warrant, police found an additional $1,640 inside the trailer, which included a "bait bill" given to Blunt by the teller. Later that night, detectives received information that Blunt was at Seven Feathers. After he was apprehended, Blunt was found to have more than $6,000 hidden in a pillowcase in his hotel room. Court-appointed defense attorney Christine Kantas Herbert said the robbery occurred at a time when Blunt was feeling "desperate." She said in hindsight her client knew it was a "dumb" mistake, and that her client is ready to move forward. "He's here to take responsibility," Herbert said. Blunt pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated first-degree theft and third-degree robbery. He was sentenced to four years in prison and two years' post-prison supervision and ordered to pay restitution totaling $2,934.75. "This really upsets me," Mejia said.
