Cable, 37, informed the district of his decision Tuesday. He’ll remain at Crater as a teacher and assistant wrestling coach, and he hopes to help out his successor in football. "Rich put in a lot of hours and energy, and I know it was disheartening to him the way things turned out," Crater athletic director Dan Speasl said. The district won’t begin its search for a new coach until results are in from Ballot Measure 30, the state income-tax surcharge that will keep schools status quo if passed. Ballots are due on Feb. 3. Speasl said he hopes the district can conduct a broad search for its next head football coach, something it didn’t do when it hired Cable, a longtime assistant, in April of 2002. Advertisement "We know we’re going to have some teachers retire, and hopefully we can match one of those spots with the new coach," Speasl said. "But we have to wait for Measure 30." Cable thought Crater could snag four or five victories last year after going 2-7 in his maiden season as a head coach. But the Comets squandered a 15-0 lead and lost 16-15 to Redmond in their season opener, then lost seven more in succession before posting a 21-19 win over Ashland in their final game. The losses ate at Cable, who lost about 20 pounds during the season. "I got pretty stressed-out towards the end," he said. "I really thought going into the season we could pull off four or five wins. I thought we had pinpointed some things from the year before that would make us better. "When that doesn’t transpire, you start second-guessing everything you do. I didn’t sleep much there for a while. I was pretty worn out." Cable said he would keep the program from going backward until a new coach is hired. Several football players are in a strength-and-conditioning class run by him, head wrestling coach Greg Haga and head basketball coach Matt Meunier, and he’s looking into summer camp options. "I think it’s going to take a coach with a lot of experience to turn this thing around," Cable said. "I think I made some strides in terms of conditioning, strength and discipline, and hopefully that will help out the new coach. "I’ll be there to help him any way I can, but I’m hoping (the district) doesn’t sit idle on this for too long."
