A Josephine County Sheriff's Office police dog was called to track Miguel Rangel-Resendiz, 25, of the 400 block of Trails End Lane, Eagle Point. According to Oregon State Police, a black 1997 Kia Sportage was speeding east on Highway 62 near milepost 5 and weaving across lanes when it plowed into the back of a brown 1997 Chevy Tahoe at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday. The Tahoe sustained moderate damage and was pushed nearly 300 feet by the force of the crash, police said. Its driver, Jose Flores, 43, of White City, was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center with whiplash and bruises, Oregon State Police reported. Flores was treated and released. The Sportage was totaled and its driver, Rangel-Resendiz, first tried to get into a witness's car, then ran from the crash site with witnesses in pursuit, the OSP report said. He eluded capture and hid in a field until the Josephine County search dog, Iax, found him at about 11:35 p.m. He told officers he had consumed six or seven beers, then fallen asleep while driving home. Officers cited and released Rangel-Resendiz on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, hit and run, and fourth-degree assault.
