SOC alums shine Three former Southern Oregon Conference basketball players had clutch performances for their NCAA women's teams Sunday. University of Portland freshman guard Ashlee Giles (North Medford) had a career-high 17 points in her first start as the Pilots defeated visiting Cal State Fullerton 79-53. Giles hit 7-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 3-pointers, had six rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocked shots in 31 minutes. Oregon State sophomore guard Cherrith Wiersma (Crater) also had a career-high 17 points in the Beavers' 66-56 loss at Long Beach State. Wiersma connected on 6-of-15 shots from the field, including 5-of-8 3-pointers. University of the Pacific sophomore guard Dolinda Meeker (North Medford) had eight points, three rebounds and two steals as the Tigers improved to 4-1 with a 53-39 victory over San Diego at Stockton, Calif.
