They all want to start at the top, and their cellphones are always in use. If the day starts at 7 a.m., they roll in sometime later, and give you a "sorry 'bout that" if you're lucky. These stories are common. We've all heard them. But there's another side to all this, one these same people never mention. Mr. Businessman, why don't you return my phone calls? Why don't you submit the bid that I asked for? Why don't you meet your schedule? Why don't you perform the work I hired you for, and not some vague approximation that you'd rather do? Why do you expect me to pay more to correct the mistakes that your inattention has created? Why do you act as though your business is actually a hobby? Please hang out a sign that warns people that you are not really in business; you just want an excuse to get out of the house. Maybe you and those useless employees deserve each other. Jon Bonifield, Eagle Point No upside to pipeline There are so many reasons I oppose the LNG pipeline coming through Southern Oregon. I urge anyone who wonders why there is resistance to implementing the pipeline in our area to check out the following sites for information: Riverkeeper and Cascadia Wildlands. I wish I could say I felt there is an upside for the pipeline coming through Southern Oregon, but I don't. Obviously that is my opinion, and I hope you will delve into the matter yourself. Ramie Streng, Ashland Words for opponents Perhaps some words of commendation are in order for those instrumental in funding the No on 92 campaign here in Oregon. What would motivate these selfless people (95 percent of whom are out of state) to spend $20 million to prevent Oregonians from unknowingly passing a law that they say would make our food prices increase due to GMO food labeling? How outright generous of them to reach that deeply into their pockets for such a benevolent cause. I do wonder, though, if maybe that money could have actually fed some people, so I did the math. At $5 each, two meals per day, $20 million would feed 1,000 people for five and a half years. Or that money could have bought farmland for new farmers and fed even more people. That gets me thinking, so I ask myself, what if these people aren't so kind, but rather shrewd business people selling us something, yet they don't want us to know what that is? Hmm. Maybe those are words of condemnation we should be offering? Daniel Gregg, Ashland Ax turkey pardoning I noticed the recent media hubbub over a Republican congressional staffer who castigated the Obama daughters for their indifference and attire during the annual pardon of two turkeys at the White House before Thanksgiving. This event happened about the same time our national debt reached the $18 trillion mark, and it seemed to me that the turkey pardon event controversy garnered more air time than the debt milestone. It even resulted in the prompt sacking of the staffer who suffered only a slightly quicker demise than what awaits the pardoned turkeys. I have a suggestion that could help with both issues: Cancel the idiotic presidential turkey-pardoning event. Think of the potential savings that could be accrued against our national debt: the price of two turkeys, the cost of holding the event, and then the feed and housing costs of trying to keep them alive for a few months until they die of natural causes and are buried. Let's say that all adds up to a savings of $18,000. In one billion years we could pay off our national debt. But I'm not holding my breath. When was the last time you heard of a federal event or program that got the ax?
