Recallers target two in Gold Hill GOLD HILL -- Two City Council members face the choice of resigning or defending their seats against a recall effort. Recall petitions were submitted Thursday, and Jackson County Clerk Kathy Beckett said organizers have more than enough signatures to force recall elections for Lisa Alexander and Bernadine Howard. Howard was the lone vote Monday against a motion to abolish the city police department in favor of a contract with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Alexander left the meeting before the vote. Neither would discuss the recall effort when reached by telephone Thursday. The matter is back in the hands of City Recorder Tony Paxton. Under state law, Alexander and Howard have five days either to resign or to submit 200-word statements to argue their cases against the recall. Beckett would schedule the election within 35 days after the five-day period ends. Councilman Hy Klaus also had been targeted for a recall effort, but he resigned Sept. 10, and Beckett said no petitions against him were submitted.
