Man leaps 80 feet from lake bridge to swim, never resurfaces By JULIE SWENSEN LOST CREEK LAKE -- A Williams man who wanted to go for a swim was presumed dead Thursday after he jumped off the Peyton Bridge above Lost Creek Lake. Theodore Jerome "Ted" Caluori, 40, had not been found by late Thursday night. The incident was reported to police about 4:20 p.m. Caluori was traveling through the area with two friends when they decided to stop for a swim and cool off, Oregon State Police Sgt. Michael Buckman said. Caluori climbed underneath the bridge span and got down to the center pillar on the west side, where he jumped about 80 feet to the water. The lake is 90 feet deep at that point. A boater below who witnessed the jump said Caluori hit the water hard. The boater saw only bubbles. "He never came back to the surface," Buckman said. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department dive team and marine patrol responded. The search was to resume this morning. Caluori and two friends were headed to Bend to visit the son of Walter Howe Jr., one of the three in the group. Howe's son had been in a coma after an automobile crash, and was in critical condition. The bridge is fenced off to prevent people from jumping. Buckman said jumping from the span is illegal and would be considered trespassing. Howe told police that Caluori had drunk three beers that day. Howe's son has emerged from his coma and his condition was upgraded, Buckman said.
