PUBLIC SAFETY Two dogs perish in east Medford house fire Comment By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 24, 2015 at 2:33 PM Updated Feb 25, 2015 at 12:05 AM By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Feb. 24, 2015 at 2:33 PM Updated Feb 25, 2015 at 12:05 AM » RELATED CONTENT • East Medford House Fire » Social News A fire Tuesday afternoon caused heavy damage to a home in a quiet east Medford neighborhood and claimed the lives of two of the residents' pets. Medford Fire Chief Brian Fish said the fire at 3235 Parkview Court was reported around 12:30 p.m., although he didn't know who called it in. "Our crews found smoke coming out of the rear of the house near the kitchen," he said. Flames had consumed much of the kitchen, and Fish said fire officials suspected the fire might have burned through the ground-level floor of the two-story house. Four engines from Medford Fire-Rescue and one from Jackson County Fire District 3 responded, along with numerous Medford fire command personnel. Fish said he wasn't certain how many people lived in the house, but the residents had three dogs, two of which died in the fire. The other dog made it out safely with one of the homeowners. Despite heavy smoke, firefighters wearing respirators were able to knock down the flames in short order. "There wasn't anything else feeding the fires," Fish said. As the smoke cleared, firefighters kept busy checking voids in the structure for pockets of flame, while others dumped piles of charred insulation and debris on the home's porch. Family members of the residents shielded them from the media and asked not to be filmed or photographed.   Further investigation revealed that a malfunctioning dishwasher had set fire to nearby cabinets and other combustible materials. The 1990, two-story  house didn't have an automatic sprinkler system, which firefighters say could have kept the fire under control in its early stages. The damage to the home was estimated at more than $100,000.  Reach reporter Thomas Moriarty at 541-776-4471 or by email at [email protected]. Follow him at @ThomasDMoriarty.
