Victim vigil planned A "Take Back the Night" candlelight vigil and rally is planned Thursday to remember victims of domestic violence and to celebrate its survivors. The event will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Medford's Alba Park downtown. There will music, poetry and speeches from community leaders taking a stand against domestic violence. Mayor Lindsay Berryman will give the opening address. Survivors of domestic violence will take the stage to share their stories, some speaking out in public for the first time, says Trinity Keeney, outreach advocate for the Dunn House, a shelter for women and children. One woman plans to share three songs she has written about her experience with domestic violence. At 7:30 p.m., participants will march by candlelight and in silence to the justice building steps, where organizers will read the names of women and children who have lost their lives to domestic violence. At the park will be the Jackson County Division of the Clotheslines Project, a visual display that bears witness to violence against women and children, Keeney says. More than 100 T-shirts, decorated either by survivors of domestic abuse or families of the victims, will be hung in the park. "Take Back the Night" has been held in Jackson County for more than 20 years and comes as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event is co-sponsored by the Jackson County Domestic Violence Council and Community Works' Dunn House. Supporters are encouraged to wear purple ribbons on Thursday to signify domestic violence awareness. To obtain a ribbon or for more information, phone Keeney at 774-4986.
