She was born in Klamath Falls, Ore. to Duane and Una Rowley in 1937. Dorothy graduated BHHS in 1955, then attended Linfield College. She married her late, beloved husband, Vern Garvin in 1956, then graduated from the Oregon Institute of Technology with an Associate degree in bookkeeping. Dorothy and Vern made their home in Brookings, Ore. and had three children, Lee, Roy, and Ruth. Together, they built and ran Curry County Communications (BECCO, Inc.), KURY Radio, and Skyline Cable. In their later years of life they purchased a farm in the Gold Hill area and planted a vineyard, Sams Valley Vineyard and started a winery, Cliff Creek Cellars. Dorothy was very involved with her community through Brookings Presbyterian Church, Soroptomist International of Brookings, International Order of the Eastern Star, International Order of Rainbow Girls, Daughters of the Nile, and Beta Sigma Phi. She was also a leader in Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, and 4-H Clubs. In all of these organizations she was a key leader and supporter, and used her musical talent to play piano for most of these organizations. She served for many years as a Grand Deputy for the State of Oregon in the International Rainbow for Girls. She also donated her time at polling stations during elections, served on several committees for the City of Brookings, and was involved with the Chetco Valley Museum. Whenever Dorothy was asked to serve, she said, “Yes!” Dorothy is survived by her children, Lee Garvin (Trish), Roy Garvin, and Ruth Garvin; her grandchildren, Kelly Garvin, Teri Wallin (Keith ) and Cory Garvin; her great-grandchild, Bailey Wallin; and her sister, Lorraine Gordon. Dorothy is also survived by a large, extended family of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 6, 2015 at Cliff Creek Cellars, 1015 McDonough Rd., Gold Hill, Ore. and the next morning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Brookings Presbyterian Church, 540 Pacific Avenue, Brookings, Ore.
