Bittle tosses no-hitter in Crater win EUGENE � Freshman pitcher Jenni Bittle began her prep career on the mound for the Crater softball team on Friday. On Saturday, she reached perfection. Bittle tossed a complete-game no-hitter, leading the Comets to a 1-0, eight-inning victory over Sheldon in Game 1 of a non-conference doubleheader. The host Irish won the nightcap 5-4. The Comets, by way of the international rule, started with Kara Ray on second base in the top half of the eighth. She advanced to third on a bunt and scored the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball. Bittle completed her first win of the season by shutting down the Irish in the bottom half of the inning. For the game, Bittle fanned eight batters and allowed only one baserunner. "She was going to be our thrower. We knew that coming into the season, said Crater coach Mike Meunier of his freshman hurler. "To pitch this well, though, is a little bit of a surprise." The Comets had their chances to put the game away but stranded runners on second and third to close the fifth and sixth innings. In Game 2, Crater looked to pick up the sweep after retaking the lead in the top of the seventh. Ray reached on a one-out single and, one out later, scored on a Diane Steele base hit. Leann Foster put the Comets on top with an RBI double. Sheldon, however, put together four hits to grab the win in their half of the inning. Ray had three hits in Game 2, while Steel and Foster each added two. Kelsey Anhorn led Crater (1-2) with two hits in the opener. EAGLE POINT 7-11, HIDDEN VALLEY 0-1 � At Eagle Point, Darci Brown pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10 in the opener and the Eagles took advantage of eight Hidden Valley errors in the nightcap for a non-conference sweep. Brown allowed a hit on the game�s first pitch and another hit in the third inning in a dominating performance. Amanda Kingery laced a two-run double to help the Eagles jump to a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Ginny Hoye had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while K.C. Grieve and Cynthia Thomas each added two hits for the Eagles (3-3). In the second game, Eagle Point scored seven runs in the second inning thanks to three hits, two walks and four errors by the Mustangs.
