Most perished by two hijacked airliners crashing into the World Trade Center in New York City and one into the Pentagon; however, 45 of those aboard a fourth aircraft sacrificed their lives to crash their aircraft before it could reach the U.S. Capitol containing the U.S. Senate chambers. 12/9/2014: The Senate Intelligence Committee, including Oregon's Sen. Ron Wyden, released a report condemning enhanced interrogation efforts by the CIA to obtain information about the terrorists. 12/15/2014: Taliban militants massacred 132 children and 10 teachers in Pakistan. They set a teacher on fire with gasoline and made the kids watch. Pakistan possessed hard proof that Tuesday’s attack had been coordinated by Taliban commanders hiding on Afghan soil. A Pew Research survey shows that Americans believe that the use of the enhanced interrogation techniques was warranted. Fifty-one percent say they think the CIA methods were justified; 56 percent believe they provided intelligence that helped prevent terrorist attacks. I give my thanks to the intelligence agencies for their unending efforts to keep us safe from the unprincipled animals who are trying their best to kill us all. Jo French, Ashland Americans are not dumb Many thanks to Marilyn vos Savant for having the courage to say what I and many others have known all along. Americans are not dumb, and we have every right to fear an Ebola epidemic in our country. And when supposedly intelligent people, like NBC News Chief Medical Editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman, deliberately ignore their voluntary quarantines, putting others at risk, we have every right to be upset about that, too. If we can isolate hockey players who have been exposed to mumps, a disease that is almost never fatal, then we can certainly isolate people who have been exposed to Ebola, a disease that more often than not is. Marti Hawes, Eagle Point Indulging craziness The Mail Tribune reports a disturbing rise in cases of whooping cough and chicken pox in the county — both diseases preventable by routine immunizations. It is well-known that there is a fringe group of parents who choose to ignore solid science and embrace Looney Tune bogeymen touting vaccines as dangerous. Of course, we are familiar with the hotbed of this cult in the city of Ashland. However, there are true believers scattered all around us. It is doubly odd because these parents are assumed to be particularly intelligent and particularly sympathetic to their fellow man. Sadly, for some odd reason, our laws permit them to indulge their selfishness and stupidity without penalty. They are creating a health hazard which endangers others. What other craziness would we indulge like we do this one? Hubert Smith, Jacksonville Supporting 'Bug Guy' We would like to give our most wholehearted thank you to everyone who is helping in the leukemia battle for Bugs-R-Us Educational Services founder, “Bug Guy” John Jackson. John was diagnosed last month with CLL, chronic lymphocytic leukemia. After three weeks of initial chemotherapy in Portland, we were able to bring him to Medford for outpatient treatments. As soon as word about John hit the community, things started to happen. A community spaghetti feed and craft-fair/auction was held, and we’ve received an amazing outpouring of support from all corners of Southern Oregon and beyond. Special thanks to the Mitchells, Ramseys, Suttons, Skeltons and Jacksons, Newswatch 12, countless schools in Southern Oregon, Jackson County Library Services and all the amazing individuals who continue to support us each and every day.
